My students need markers, index cards, and other supplies to do hands-on projects that center around engineering concepts. We create structures with notecards, tape and prongs.
There is no typical day in my classroom as the students and I are constantly looking for new ways to learn. The best way to get students to problem solve is by laying a problem out and providing material to help solve it. Students enjoy projects related to real world problems.
The students in my class are gifted and talented students who come a very diverse culture background.
I have students whose families have traveled all over the world to get to America. In one class I have students with direct roots from Nigeria, Mexico, Vietnam, and Iraq. They highly value education and are clearly motivated to learn. My school has a rising poverty rate. We currently have 65% of our students on the free and reduced lunch plan. Needless to say, teachers spend a lot of their own money. We don't have enough students to qualify for Title One funds, but have enough to see a strong need for materials.
My Project
I'm asking for a wide variety of products to stock up my classroom for a variety of projects. We will build houses and buildings out of notecards to withstand earthquakes on a mock shake table. Students will work on research projects then do team presentations with our presentation boards. These materials will be used not only for specific projects but will be used throughout the year.
My project will make a difference because it will provide the materials to create learning instead of just reading about it.
Students are engaged in problem solving as they engineer designs and work together to solve the problems that I present. they are highly creative and talented. The use of the materials will provide an outlet for their talents. When they work on presentations and team building, they will learn skills needed for future employments as well.
