Electronic Keyboards for Young Musicians (Part 2)

My project needs 1 electronic keyboard with 61 fullsize keys and general MIDI.

As the music teacher to over 300 young musicians at a fine arts magnet cluster school in urban IL, I teach general music to students in grades K-8. The general music classes for primary grades include movement, singing, and playing instruments. Students in upper grades sing, play instruments, and focus more on theoretical and historical aspects of music. Students in grades 6-8 learn about the historical eras of music in addition to the theoretical aspects of music. There are a high percentage of students at the school receiving special education services for autism. The school received a grant for a music keyboard lab including 20 music keyboards several years ago. All students use the keyboards during the year to explore musical concepts of pitch, tempo, beat, and melody. Students with autism use the keyboards. The students manipulate the keyboards and experiment with instrumentation.

The school is very fortunate to have this beautiful keyboard lab. However, in large classes there are not enough keyboards for all students to use, and students must sit with 2 or perhaps even 3 students at the same keyboards. My music students are excited about the prospect of playing in the keyboard lab, and ideally each student would have creative control of their own instrument. In the ideal keyboard lab, each student would be able to compose and create their music free from the distraction of a student who was playing music on the same keyboard.

For this proposal, I am requesting 1 electronic keyboard which will be added to the keyboard lab at my school. The new keyboard will allow additional students to have their own instruments during music class. The keyboard will be use in keyboarding class where students learn to play the musical keyboard and by general music students. Over the course of the year hundreds of students will play the instrument as they learn to read music, compose, and improvise.
