My Students
Remember the magic of science class when you were growing up? Physics opens up a world of wonder and excitement for young minds. While learning important concepts, we get to have fun with the coolest toys in school.
My students come from very diverse backgrounds; I try to instill a sense of wonder and awe in science.
The magic of Physics comes alive in my room with interactive projects, hands-on labs, and mind blowing demos that reveal deep misconceptions most of us have about how things work. On the first day of school my students work together to try to understand how Lenz' Law works (without ever having been taught the concept). It's amazing to see the ideas that sprout forth on that first day. From then on, they are constantly challenged and must defend their positions with evidence.
My Project
My students have used triple beam balances for the 15 years I have been teaching. It is a great skill to have. But at the same time, it is much more time consuming and I know that when they get into college and in the workforce (whether that is in engineering, health fields, or any science), they will be almost exclusively using electronic balances. So I plan on having them master the triple beam balance in the first quarter of the year. I will then move them onto the electronic balances for the rest of the year.
Electronic balances are more efficient and can give more accurate results to my students which will make the relationships I am trying to show easier to see.
It will be a tool that can help students with finding trends and they can more quickly and efficiently move through the activities. I expect the productivity to go up when I introduce the balances. Thank you very much for reading through my proposal!
