I work in a classroom with chalkboards. It is difficult to work through the clouds of chalk dust and get volunteers when the students don't want to get dirty. They need to get involved!
My students are low income urban city-dwellers struggling to rise above their circumstances and be successful in life.
They work hard and are actively involved in giving back to the community. The majority of my students are minorities or first/second generation immigrants.
My Project
The ELMO will make our chalkboard obsolete. Unlike a standard overhead projector, the document reader is a color camera that can show anything you put under it! This includes calculators, student work, or even project pieces. This will bring a new dimension of interactivity to the classroom and let all of the students become active participants!
see my students fade away every day during my lectures, bored with the presentation and monotony. With your help, it will become possible for my students to experience math in ways they never imagined! You will help them find meaning in math, perhaps encouraging them to pursue careers in engineering or other technical fields! They will have access to educational tools that will increase their motivation and better prepare them for college. And it will all be thanks to your generous donation!
Working with such base technology as chalk boards, I have trouble getting students involved during lectures.
The sheer time it takes for them to go up to the chalkboard and copy down their work makes it quite prohibitive. The ELMO will make sharing work a breeze. They can just bring up their work and place it under the document camera for the entire class to see! Easy, accessible, and involved!
