My students need a tough electric pencil sharpener that won't break and plenty of #2 pencils to go along with it.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a teacher of 24 bright, talented and lovable second grade students. My school is a barrier free school. This means that my school opens its doors to every child in the neighborhood, regardless of their handicap or physical ailment. Many children use wheelchairs, canes and walkers. They grow, learn and thrive right alongside their peers. It's an amazing thing to experience and be part of.

Every year, the biggest problem that I have in my classroom is a simple one - pencils!! Most students do not come to school with any pencils. I do the best I can to supply my students with pencils that I buy, but they always seem to break or disappear. Many of my students bring their classroom pencils home to do their homework and forget to return them the next day. Some days, it takes an incredible amount of time to make sure every student has a pencil, and that it is sharpened. Every electric sharpener that I have bought in the past has broken shortly after I purchase it. That is another area of great frustration!

I would love to give my students the freedom to not have to worry about finding pencils and keeping them sharp. If I could supply my class with #2 pencils and an open-access sharpener all year round, I can't even imagine the amount of time and frustration that would be saved!

It seems like a simple request, but to my students and myself, it would mean the world!
