This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a teacher of 32 bright and talented 2nd grade students. My school is a barrier-free school, which means my school opens its doors to every child in the community, regardless of their physical or mental handicap. These children work and thrive alongside their peers everyday.
I work in a very impoverished and dangerous area.
My students have seen more in their short lives than most adults will see in their lifetime. School is their safe haven. Every year, the biggest problem that I have in my classroom is a very simple one - pencils! Just about every single one of my students does not come to school with pencils.
I do the best that I can to purchase and supply my students with pencils, but they always seem to break or quickly disappear. Many of my students bring the pencils that I give them in the classroom home at night to do their homework with. They don't have any pencils at home either. Most days, it takes an incredible amount of time to make sure that every student has a sharpened pencil. This is time that should be spent on learning, not wasted trying to see who needs supplies. Every single electric sharpener that I've purchased in the past (and I've bought more than I can count!)has broken shortly after I purchased it.
This is another area of great frustration!
My Project
I would love it if my my students did not have to worry about finding sharpened pencils to write with every single day in school, and at home. If I could supply all 32 of my students with #2 pencils and give them open access to a durable electric sharpener all year round, I can't even begin to imagine the amount of time and frustration that would be saved in the classroom.
I know an electric sharpener and pencils seem like a simple request, but it would truly make a world of difference for me and my students.
The amount of time that we'd save with new pencils and a new sharpener would allow me to educate my children to my utmost capacity.
