This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Are you following the presidential election? Are you keeping up with the news? Maybe you subscribe to newspapers or news magazines, but not my fourth graders. Coming from working class homes, most of their families can't afford to subscribe to news periodicals.

My fourth graders live in a working class and immigrant neighborhood.

Most of them are learning English as a second language, some have special needs, and all of them love to learn. Our Title I school is an important safe haven for my kids, who are surrounded by poverty and gang activity.

My Project

My students enjoy their subscription to Time for Kids every year, but this year is special--it's an election year. We will start our election unit in August. My students will research the presidential candidates, color the blue and red states on their maps, and predict which way the "swing" states will go. In late October they will participate in the "National Student Mock Election," where millions of American kids vote for president (and usually predict the outcome). With a subscription to Time for Kids, my fourth graders will read kid-oriented news articles about the election and the events afterward. When the election news slows down, Time for Kids will keep my kids hooked on current events all year long.

What better to way to teach kids about the upcoming election than to get them to read a news magazine?

My fourth graders are inquisitive and want to learn about the world. With your generous donation, every week in my classroom will be time to learn about the presidential election, time for the news, and Time for Kids. My students and I thank you!
