This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

My students attend an urban public middle school in a low socio-economic area in southern California. They are a group of bright 7th graders who derive from hard-working families and who have to balance their rigorous academic work while tackling the challenges of living in a community plagued by the ills of poverty.

My students, regardless of the issues they face on a daily basis, have goals, drive, and most importantly they are hungry for knowledge. They possess great aspirations for change in their neighborhood, our country, and the world.

Printing supplies will facilitate teaching and learning in our classroom. These students are extremely inquisitive and enjoy engaging in research. They often will come up with their own research topics based on the themes we touch upon in English class and present their findings to their peers. However, the research process becomes difficult given the lack of technological availability and access at our school. We have a few desktop computers in our class, but no printing source that students can use to put their projects together.

Your donations will allow my students to fully engage in a process of inquiry and research that they have come to find enjoyable.

Furthermore, having this technology at the tip of their fingers and participating in the research process will allow my students to be college and career ready as they move on to face the challenges of high school and beyond.

In Their Own Words

Being able to print in our classroom, instead of the public library, will allow us to be able to explain our research findings and ideas in a clearer manner to our peers and adults on campus during Open House. We will be able to create "Pop-up" poster projects that highlight the learning we've done in English class. Lastly, being able to print our work will allow us to feel a sense of pride in our work because it will look more scholarly and professional.

I am extremely inspired to work on our research projects because we will be able to work alongside our peers. We don't often get the chance to work together and put our collective creative juices to work for one cause: getting an A in English class. It also makes me happy to know that our parents, guardians, other students, and the community as a whole will be able to see our final research projects displayed throughout the school grounds during Open House.

Sometimes I feel like students at my school are not encouraged to participate in group activities/projects because there is not much recognition of our hard work. We turn in projects or reports, they're graded, and returned to us. We don't have the opportunity to show our work to anyone else. The only person who recognizes our hard work is our English teacher, Ms.Santos. Through this project, we will be able to raise student morale and give the kids in our class the opportunity to really show pride and ownership of our work.
