I love that my students are diverse. We are a Title I school, with 100 percent of our students qualifying for free lunches. We are 40 percent African American, 38 percent Hispanic, 11 percent Caucasian, and 11 percent of mixed heritage.
My students have survived many things during the pandemic, including homelessness, divorce, parents imprisoned, and poverty.
They are resilient with the most beautiful spirits. We also have the STAR program at our school, which provides services for students with mental illness. This has put a drain on our entire school, and with just 8 weeks in, we have already been through 2 soft lockdowns and had several teacher's cars vandalized. They come to school every day with a willingness to learn and the hope that their lives will be better.
My Project
My project is for my ELA WIN groupings. It is to target 2nd and 3rd graders and will focus on the following Nevada standards - L2.1, L2.2, and L2.3, as well as SL3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, L3.1, L3.2, L3.3, L3.4, and L3.6. They love creating words, so I focused on that type of skill. I have a CVC group, an R controlled vowel group, and a blends digraphs group. I bought my own supplies, and that limited amount is something they look forward to. The items I picked out will help them with manipulatives and make it fun, without drawing attention to their deficits.
