My Students

“The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled.” ― Plutarch. As an EL teacher, I have participated in multiple professional development opportunities. This NCTE conference in Baltimore, MD will give me the opportunity to bring resources back to my classroom. I will have the chance to gain knowledge from experts in the field of English Education.

Your donation to this project will enhance my knowledge as an educator of English Learners.

Our school community works hard to provide the best possible education for our students! My classroom of fourth-grade EL students come from countries such as Algeria and Cambodia. There are 20 different language groups in my school. We celebrate the rich diversity of our school community. For many of my students, this is their first experience with English. In my school of over 500 students, 50% of the students are English Learners. Your support is greatly appreciated!

My Project

The process of language acquisition intrigued me and I knew instantly that becoming an ESOL teacher was what I wanted to do. As an ESOL teacher, I have a diverse group of students from many linguistic backgrounds. Each year, thousands of educators meet for The National Council of Teachers of English. This year the conference is in Baltimore, MD. At this conference, participants from all over the country learn and collaborate with each other to share best practices for language and literacy acquisition. At the conference, I will learn the latest strategies and skills to engage elementary students in reading. I will learn about the latest and best children's books at the Children's Award Luncheon. After my first year in the classroom, I joined the Philadelphia Writing Project. Since then, I have participated in a scoring conference with the National Writing Project. This project will also include registration for the National Writing Project brunch. This project will cover the registration cost for the conference, the Children's Award Luncheon, and the National Writing Project Brunch.

Your donation to this professional development project to the 2019 NCTE Convention will enhance my knowledge as an educator of English Language Learners.
