This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are jumping in head first into a brand new culture for them, a new way of life, and are loving every minute of it. They enjoy each others company and feel safe around one another which makes my job easier. They are a vibrant group that enjoy learning and when given material they can understand, work well. Now if I can only get them to stop talking =D.
My students are primarily from Latin American countries, like in the Caribbean.
Their grades range from 6-8 grade. They have great spirits and show a desire to learn. Even though they have not known each other for very long they share a connection probably derived from their similar backgrounds. They have only been in the US for a short number of years; some are added to my class a week after they arrive from their countries. You may find it hard to tell who is new to the class after a week or so because they become acclimated so quickly. They are a good bunch and with your help, I hope to give them the solid and meaningful education that they deserve.
My Project
My students come from different parts of the Spanish speaking world. Most of them are from the Caribbean; the majority come from places where schools are behind. If you have been to urban school districts in the US and counted the number of "working" computers, then you will know where they are coming from. To add to that, my students need material in their own language which we do not have as of yet. Bilingual education is more common in larger immigrant populations, but because of the variety of languages and lack of resources for these programs, these students rely on the teachers ability to create learning material in their respective languages, from scratch. I cannot fit into a few short paragraphs how much of a difference having these Lenovo Chromebooks will have on these students.
My daughters are going to a school where every student will be assigned a Chromebook to use for the year; I thought, "how great if we could do that." Simply having Chromebooks for students to use in the classroom whenever needed is a huge help.
We are a Google school, and having these Chromebooks will allow us to take advantage of the products google has available, like Google Translate. This technology can empower students to research in their own language (while learning a new one as well). Keeping up with assignments and self-monitoring for growth and performance will possible with graphs and charts made in Google Sheets. Students will benefit from pre-made lessons made with Screencastify which they can revisit any time to supplement instruction. My students have a variety of learning styles and are at different levels; Chromebooks will foster independent study while allowing the teacher to target individual student needs and areas of growth.
