This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My third graders love coming to school every day to learn reading, writing and math in two languages. They are eager readers and creative writers. They love playing fun games during our daily morning meeting, and sing songs to greet each other every morning. My students enjoy playing soccer, hula hoop, jump rope, and just chasing each other during recess time. The idea of going on field trips delight them very much.
My students always have a good attitude toward academic work.
They learn all their subjects in two languages, and having to bridge their understanding in what they are learning every day is the road that will take them to succeed in life, and they are up to it.
Most of my third graders come from the neighborhood, walk to school and have free breakfast and lunch. A lot of them come from single households and many times their parents work two jobs to make ends meet. Despite these circumstances, they are ready to face new challenges, and I always get greeted every morning with the same question, “What are we learning today?”
My Project
My third graders love to read about animals, hurricanes, the solar system and other informational texts, and they will soon start their Research Clubs of non-fiction books. They will be not only researching, but also synthesizing information about the topic (and subtopics) of their choice. Each member of the club needs to be able to find information and then share it with the club. It is essential to have several texts with different structures to help them build links between one factor and another.
My third graders are in great need of textbooks about animals, and other Informational texts to enable them to compare, contrast, and organize the information found in the texts.
Our classroom library doesn't have enough resources to allow them to research properly. They are hoping to create small collections of accessible, high interest books on non-fictional subjects to start their research clubs.
