Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Education Opens Doors," this is my students’ daily motto. In order to get a quality science education my students need to do more than just read about science; they need to engage in hands on experiments and activities on a daily basis. These experiences will set my students up for success.

This is my students' final year in middle school as they prepare to venture off into high school.

I teach at a Title 1 inner city school, most of my students are recent immigrants, and about 92% receive a free or reduced lunch. Most of my students will be the first in their families to graduate from high school, let alone attend college. I want to make graduating high school and attending a four year university a reality for my 113 students. At the university level science courses are a requirement no matter the student’s major. The best way to set them up for success is to see how they use science in their daily lives, to think like scientists, and to be scientists. Without this exposure, they will be at a disadvantage not only on standardized tests, but also upon applying to jobs and college. School is the only place they'll get exposure to science and these opportunities.

My Project

Having these supplies will expose my students to hands on labs and experiments that will help them understand the vast science curriculum. The majority of my students are English language learners, thus understanding vocabulary is critical. The rings and note cards will serve as a good study tool and allow them to comprehend difficult science concepts. Eighth grade science covers basic science inquiry and investigation, earth science, life science, chemistry, and physics. Having models as well as hands on labs for these concepts is critical to helping them comprehend the extensive science curriculum. For example, students will benefit from seeing the Earth rotate around the sun while the moon revolves around the Earth. This enables them to understand the changes in seasons as well as the phases of the moon. This is just one of many difficult concepts these supplies will enable the students to understand.

Your support will allow my students to engage in hands on activities to make learning science relevant in their lives.

Success in middle school science will inspire my students as they continue into high school science courses. Please help my students realize that education really will open doors in their lives. Thank you for your support of the class of 2015!
