My class has a total of 30 4th grade bilingual students. All of them are scholars who are passionate about learning and enjoy hands-on activities. Many of them do not have the resources they need to experience and explore learning in a variety of contexts...so having a variety of resources at school does not only enrich their learning, but their life experiences as well.
My students are thrilled about the different things that we'll be learning about during this school year, and what a better way to fulfill this excitement than giving them a variety of resources to express themselves and a classroom environment that will allow them to collaborate with each other.
During the school year, we'll be learning about poetry and a variety of holidays and traditions such as Halloween and Dia de los Muertos, Thanksgiving, and many more. Our goal will be to write a variety of poems, legends, making altars, and more. This will support them with their learning of academic content, culture, and to improve their writing skills in English and Spanish. For math, we'll have multiple hands-on centers that will lead every child in the room to reach grade level proficiency.
All of our students enjoy the mathematics and literacy blocks, but they start feeling frustrated when they don't have resources that allow them to work with more efficiency. Why does this happen? This happens because they use a great part of their stamina on making diagrams instead of getting focused on understanding their reading and math problems.
The abacus and beads chains in this project will allow the students to use effective and productive strategies to finish their work a little faster; this will allow them to be able to focus more on their understanding.
The abacus and beads will be used for the students to multiply with more fluency. The word family books will help the kids to improve their reading skills, and focus more on comprehension, instead of focusing on decoding words.
