This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Going into my eleventh year teaching, I am excited to be in first grade. I look forward to teaching them a developmentally appropriate curriculum that blends social and emotional experiences with academic learning. I want to guide students in becoming excellent communicators, collaborators, creative, critical thinkers, and caring citizens.

My goal as an educator is to empower all students to thrive in the 21st century.

Our school serves a large population of English Language Learners with diverse backgrounds. It is a Title I school and all of the students receive free breakfast and lunch.

My Project

Teaching young children how to read and write is one of the most important reasons why I went into teaching. When I was in elementary, I was a struggling reader and writer. I was placed in bilingual classes and then put in English classes without a smooth transition. I never felt I had the right support to succeed in my early years in school.

I want to learn effective teaching practices to help develop skilled readers and writers.

I want to be the support a child needs to be successful. The Reading and Writing Strategies Book have hundreds of strategies that I could implement in my first graders. Furthermore, the books The Next Step Forward in Guided Reading and The Guided Reading Teacher's Companion will provide me with the instructional tools I need to teach guided reading well.
