My Students

We are a suburban, neighborhood middle school with over 800 students from diverse backgrounds. Our school has two Physical Education/Health and Wellness teachers who share the gym with over 60 students participating at a time. Two of our class periods also include an additional 10-12 special needs and physically impaired students, adding an additional dynamic to the atmosphere. Assessing and evaluating our students' skills and activities can be a real challenge at times.

Our students have built a strong community, and they are committed to making it healthy.

Staying strong and healthy can be difficult when you come from a low-income area. Over 50% of our students receive free or reduced breakfast and lunch daily. As a staff, we emphasize eating right and maintaining a strong and healthy body and mind.

My Project

First, let us define the term Ergonomics. Ergonomics is an applied science that looks at how a worker can be more efficient and comfortable when performing job functions. Some of the benefits of using a standing desk, which are supported by science.

As my role as a Health and Wellness Instructor it is vital that young people not only see but can also use various techniques in class. By having a mobile standing desk my students can use it during peer assessment and various class activities throughout the year. The ability to see and feel the difference in work/assessment positions will provide them with a tactile understanding of how the body can work more efficiently.
