My Students
My English Language Learners are AMAZING. These sweet 5th and 6th graders are extremely motivated; some start the year speaking little or no English, and by end the year, they are writing essays and giving speeches.
My students strive to overcome the enormous challenge of learning a completely new language WHILE completing middle-school level assignments at an academically rigorous school!
Our school is located in an urban area, and the vast majority of my students come from low-income households. Many of my students' parents do not speak English and work multiple jobs, so there is limited academic support at home.
Despite these challenges, my students show up each day with a positive attitude and the will to learn; it's truly inspiring.
My Project
Next year, I will be teaching a group of English Language Learners (ELLs) with an incredibly wide range of language needs. Some students speak almost no English and will need intensive language interventions, while others know more English but are several grade-levels behind their peers.
Access to technology would allow me to individualize my language instruction in a way that promotes significant growth and achievement.
For example, while I'm working with one group on intensive language instruction, other students will use the 4 computers to access an online reading program aimed at boosting literacy. By alternating these groupings, I can ensure that students at varying levels receive the support they need.
Currently, the English as a Second Language Program (ESL) shares computers with the 200 students at the school. Consistent access to technology would allow my students to make great strides in their language and literacy development. As a result, these bright and motivated students will be more successful in their rigorous academic classes.
