Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have been given the opportunity to teach the best group of little people imaginable. They are kind, generous, and appreciate the small things in life. They arrive each day with a smile, ready to show world the greatness inside of them.
These little people are absolutely amazing.
They face many challenges and hardships that would defeat any average person. One hundred percent of my students receive free lunch, English is a second language for the majority of my class, and many are facing extraordinary challenges at home. Some even experience periods of homelessness. My students are not average, however. They are extraordinary!
Despite the many challenges they face, they come to school ready and excited to learn! They come with open minds and open hearts and are the most remarkable and kindhearted people I have had the pleasure to know. This is shown day after day as they request extra time to work in place of recess, show excitement over every lesson or activity I plan, persevere to complete accurate work no matter how long it takes, and extend a helping hand to classmates when they need it.
My Project
Many of my students experience bouts of homelessness throughout the school year. This has an effect on what they do both in and out of the classroom. The best way for them to overcome being homeless is through education. It is a high priority for me to make sure that they are engaged and learning.
One of the best ways to engage students is by transforming education.
Many students do not have the focus to sit down all day at a desk and complete traditional school work, I know I wouldn't! I plan to take learning to a whole new level by doing a room transformation. Inspired by Ron Clark, one of the first room transformations I want to complete is a full out crime scene.
Context clues, making inferences, and drawing conclusions are crucial skills for reading. Why not make it fun? Imagine being 8 years old and walking into a real-life crime scene. There is police tape everywhere, your teacher is now Detective Dixon, and you get your own hat, mustache, and magnifying glass. You have a special detective notebook and now instead of sitting still reading and answering the same boring questions, you will search for clues with reading embedded to solve a mystery and crack a case!
I am requesting police tape, fake mustaches, footprints, detective hats, magnifying glasses, and a detective costume to help set the scene and hook the students. This is the room (and teacher) transformation. The detective notebooks and pencils I am requesting will help students record and write their thinking in a fun way. The invisible ink will be used as clues and can also be used in math for students to record their thoughts. Finally, the context clues and inference cards will be embedded in the classroom mysteries.
