Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a teacher in the Bronx serving nine 5th and 6th graders with learning disabilities. Their functioning level is at the 2nd and 3rd grade level. I started teaching in this school last school year with the same students that I have this year. A majority of my kids have a hard time reading and doing math.
One good thing about my students however is that despite their difficulty, they still show the same determination they would need in a regular education environment.
Also, the attention span of these kids is very limited, so that they don't benefit much from a lecture. Therefore, I used a lot of visual aids and manipulatives to keep them focused.
I teach my students Math, Reading and Writing. I am trained to use the WILSON LANGUAGE SYSTEM, a reading strategy which is designed for students with dyslexia. I have also attended a training session at channel Thirteen in Manhattan regarding video streaming and maximaxing internet use in the classroom. This knowledge is great for my students but only if we have the necessary equipment to support it.
I want them to receive the knowledge that information technology can bring and let them experience fun-filled activities. I also want them to increase their chances of passing the City Wide test.
We do have old Mac in our room but it doesn't have the capacity for video streaming or running the Wilson system. We need a small TV with a VCR player and a computer which we can use to stream or to download educational lessons and activities.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
