Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I have the honor of working with the most amazing middle school students in an urban inner city district.
My students are made up of grades 5-8, who have intellectual impairments, as well as Autism and PDD. They are an amazing group of kids. I am responsible for teaching ELA and Social Skill Development.
My school can only be described as extremely progressive. It seeks to provide all of its students with an education of the highest quality. We strive toward a safe environment that stimulates students to perform at their greatest abilities on a daily basis. We lead by example and teach our students about the importance of academics and studying , as well as the importance of respect and good character. We challenge students to set high goals and we provide them with the tools to achieve those goals. Our school is a community, and therefore we encourage students, teachers, and parents to communicate and work cooperatively in order to maximize the success of our students.
My Project
My students learn best through small group and hands on activities. I am desperately in need of tables that will maximize my students' abilities to engage daily in social skill development and in ways that capitalize on their ability to access their curriculum.
Using kidney shaped tables will allow my students to be able to work more easily in groups. The tables will allow the students to form one large group of 8 or to pull apart and work in a group of 4.
Horseshoe tables allow the educator to be more available to engage with the students because of the same at one end of the table. It is often hard to work successfully in a group, sharing materials, etc. when using circular, square, and rectangular desks.
I would like to believe that using kidney-shaped tables could be a part of the solution to how we effectively meet individual student’s needs.
Students will be able to work more effectively in groups, increasing their social skill development as well as their educational needs. This type of table helps keep children more focused because they are in close proximity to the teacher, and when children are focused, they are able to larger strides in their learning and feel more successful.
