Each day I get to spend my day with a wonderful bunch of 4th-grade students. Our classroom is filled with varying levels of learning abilities, diverse backgrounds and a huge desire to succeed! We are in a title-one school situated within a high-need community.

Our class is a mini community and all of the students have jobs and are paid in scholar dollars. They have scholar dollar "bank accounts" where they make deposits each week. Every month we have a store day or an auction. The end of the school year we will be having a huge auction and I keep reminding the students that they might want to save some of their scholar dollars. Each month more than half of them spend almost everything they have earned.

To help teach the importance of the benefits of saving versus instant gratification, we will use the computer to create "bank account" ledgers, research topics relating to economy: such as supply & demand, the importance of saving money, how accounts earn interest, etc. The students will also be creating their own stores. They will be individually owned and operated. Each student will be stocking their stores with hand made items, gently used items, a service (playing a game, nail painting..), or other inexpensive items. Using the computer and ink for the printer they will be able to keep track of their expenses & profits, make signs for their stores and research ideas. This will give them the opportunity to learn about profit, consumers, supply and demand, etc. These students are so used to wanting "things" right now for fear of it not being there tomorrow, I feel it is vitally important to teach them the importance of saving. They are also not familiar with the excitement of being an entrepreneur and this will allow them to see they can accomplish whatever they set their sights on.

Your support of this project will enable my students, who don't have the opportunity to see why it is important to save and invest in the "real world," to witness and experience the satisfaction of financial security. You will also assist in the process of empowering them to aim high in their financial endeavors; whether it be owning a business, creating a product or saving for college!
