Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students all live and attend school in the poorest district in the country - The South Bronx. The majority of my students live in tenement housing, come from single family homes or live with someone other than their parents, and qualify for free or reduced lunch. I am a special education middle school teacher, and teach a self-contained bridge class (multiple grades in one classroom) with grades 6, 7, and 8. I have a total of 8 boys whom are all classified as oppositional defiant and emotionally disturbed. Their reading levels range between first grade through fourth grade - all below the national average. My school's student demographics consist of 3% Asian, 34% African American, 61% Hispanic, 2% White, and 22% are English Language Learners.
My students are a protective and energetic bunch who require lots of love, patience, and innovative teaching to ignite their curiosity and keep that fire burning for learning.
My students and I are excited for the possibilities of attaining new materials to keep things exciting and fresh as the year progresses. We thank you in advance for any help and we promise to post photos to show or appreciation!
My Project
It would be empowering if each child had technology integrated into their classrooms. I happen to teach at a school in the South Bronx, where according to the 2010 Census, has almost half of the population living at or below the U.S. Poverty Rate line. Many of my students come from single parent households, and have little to no access to any means of technology at home.
My classroom is composed of 8 boys all of who have emotional disabilities.
It’s my desire to have these children exposed to areas outside of their norm, expand their horizons and open the door for future opportunities.
Our classroom does not have desktops or laptops for student use. We have one laptop, which we use exclusively for our projector. I teach a double block of ELA and Math, and have my kids in one room for up to 3.5 hours at times. This is a lot for any individual. Now multiply that a few times over for a group of middle school boys who struggle with attention and behaviors. With a group like mine, you have got to stay creative to keep the engagement and learning going. Unfortunately, with limited resources, that becomes a challenge.
All of my colleagues strive for excellence, and we make do with the limited resources that we are provided. Having an iPad and printer in the class benefits my students by having technology assist them in a discrete setting that allow for differentiated pacing and immediate feedback.
Please help our class by providing my students with a fun and modern platform that can expose our kids to a new world of opportunities, which transcend into the real world.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
