Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher in one of the highest poverty school districts in the state, my students are faced with daily challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite these challenges, I am aiming for school to be a safe place where my students can learn, express themselves and their creativity.

My students come from diverse linguistic, racial, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

My classroom is a fully inclusive classroom filled with the most enthusiastic and creative learners. This means there are both general and special education students learning together and from one another. Day in and day out, I'm amazed at how they look at the world. Their sense of wonder, curiosity and enthusiasm for learning makes me excited for what the future holds.

My Project

Books can be powerful tools to begin empowering conversations on race, diversity, and inclusion with students.

I want to be able to provide my students with more books to allow them to understand racism and empower them to help work towards racial equality.

After the tragedy involving George Floyd last year, I have been inspired to revamp our reading materials to include more strong black and brown characters and books that encourage discussion about diversity, ability and empathy. These books will also help to de-stigmatize differences and help to celebrate diversity. Children are our hope for the future! I want to make sure that in my classroom, I am doing my part to help them become strong individuals to stand up for injustice.

My hope is that through intentional teaching and education using these books, I can help my students grow to be change-makers in a society free of hate and racism.
