"Mistakes are proof that you are trying," is a quote that I impart to my students in the hopes they internalize that learning mastery takes consistent practice. It's a process that is not about right answers but asking inquiring questions to gain insights and raise awareness around how we learn and ways we learn best.
As a teacher of students with special needs, I serve students whose learning difficulties may range from recall, focus and attention, and speech.
At times these cognitive difficulties are compounded with the challenges of learning English as a Second Language while having to master subject content.
My classroom is about encouraging my students to overcome self-doubt and build confidence in their ability to learn. My High School is a Title I school located in New York City. We have an extremely diverse population of students from around the world, including Latin America, Asia, Europe, and Africa.
My Project
With an inclusive book library, I hope to create a community that truly honors everyone.
“We are all implicated when we allow other people to be mistreated.
An absence of compassion can corrupt the decency of a community, a state, a nation. Fear and anger can make us vindictive and abusive, unjust and unfair, until we all suffer from the absence of mercy. And we condemn ourselves as much as we victimize others.” -Bryan Stevenson, Just Mercy
I am grateful to the Donorschoose Store for offering books that examine concepts of social identity, race, ethnicity, and racism. As a multi-ethnic society, many of us have deep and personal connections to more than one culture and may struggle with establishing a sense of self, finding belonging, and feeling seen. Not only will students learn about some of the ways people of different races have been oppressed, they will also learn about resistance and hopefully feel empathy and empowerment to combat injustice wherever they witness it so as a society, we can collectively move toward equity and liberation.
