My Project
I am proud to call myself a lifelong Brooklynite. I'm even prouder to say that I teach Language Arts and Reading to a TERRIFIC group of 8th Graders at a Title I middle school in beautiful Brooklyn, New York. In order to participate in Peer Editing and Close Reading activities, students need to annotate text and offer suggestions from reference tools such as an old fashioned dictionary and thesaurus. Highlighters are not a luxury, they are a necessity. These items help students to analyze their thoughts and help important information stand out. This, of course, teaches important College Readiness skills as well. Since we are a Title I school, most children are not able to bring these items to school regularly.
We DESPERATELY need sets of highlighters, as well as dictionaries and thesauri to use in our Language Arts class for annotating and peer edit texts as we read.
Without these tools, it is very difficult to locate and separate the important information students need to remember.
Not having these materials has made it difficult to prepare for High School, as well as become College and Career ready. Annotating is a vital skill that cannot happen without the proper tools. My students are ready and eager to learn. Help color their world happy by supplying them with the tools they need to learn.
