My Students

I have been teaching at the same Title I school for the last 17 years, and every year is better than the last. If I had to describe my students in one word, it would be amazing! They are determined, dedicated, enthusiastic, and engaged. We are in the midst of our year-long journey of learning full of new experiences and challenges. I know that they are willing to work hard, take risks, and make incredible progress.

Every year I teach my students important information like how to read and write and do math problems.

Still, in the end, they teach me some pretty important things, too, like how to enjoy the moment, show empathy and understanding for each other during difficult times, be flexible, conquer challenges, power through difficult situations, and how to be resilient. I am lucky to have them!

My Project

Right now my school district has decided to stay virtual until our health metrics indicate it is safe to return to face-to-face learning. Even though we have not been in the school building since last March, my students are doing an amazing job with virtual learning.

This project is for a selection of edible snacks that we can use for math activities during our graphing unit.

We can use these snacks to vote and make class graphs for our favorite cookie, favorite color of gummy bear, and which bubble gum flavor makes the best bubbles. This project also includes snacks like M&Ms, Skittles and fruit snacks that students can use to make individual graphs.

Making the graphs edible increases student engagement and also allows students to have a snack during our learning time. Many of our students are receiving food assistance from our school system, but this does not include a lot of snacks. Kindergarteners love snacks and constantly need some quick and easy to eat during virtual learning. This project would serve a dual purpose of providing edible math materials and providing students with a quick snack for virtual learning.
