This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have a wonderful group of 5th grade students who are highly motivated and have a true passion for learning. They are my inspiration as they push me to think outside of the box to develop learning experiences to meet their varying interests and diverse needs.

My students represent a very mixed population both culturally and economically, and despite challenges, they always give their own personal best and push to succeed!

I teach at a Title I school where I am lucky enough to get to work with such dedicated and hard working students and partner with a group of supportive parents who share the common goal of a quality education for their children.

My Project

My students want to transform an ugly concrete space into an edible garden where we can learn about health and nutrition. My students are requesting materials to help them plant from seeds and care for fruits & vegetables such as lettuce, tomatoes, and radish. Planting will be in the raised garden beds and once harvested, a farmer's market experience will be created where students will get to taste and sample what they have grown. This will allow students to work with their peers to design and create this experience.

Through this edible garden, students will also learn about health and nutrition, and more specifically the importance of eating healthy with a push of at least "5 A Day" serving of fruits and/or vegetables.

We will integrate into classroom learning. Students will identify serving sizes and nutritional values on labels in order to make good judgements about what they are eating, and creating "new" menus that include healthy alternatives or additions to unhealthy menu choices that they will then share with others.

Our project will make a difference by increasing students' awareness of where food comes from, and most importantly how they can incorporate healthy eating habits into their daily diet. It is my hope that that learning about and developing good health and nutrition patterns early in life, will lead my students to healthier patterns of behavior in their future.
