Ecosystem Movies Using Stop Motion Cameras in the 5th Grade!
My students need Stop Motion Animation kits and art supplies to create their own STEM movies.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. L. Walker's classroom raised $571
This project is fully funded
My Students
My scholars are a diverse group of 5th graders that live in a rural community in Hawaii. Many of them come from economically disadvantaged homes and have limited resources and experiences usually available to students their age living in the United States.
As their teacher, I hope to provide opportunities for learning for them through project based learning where they will be able to nurture their basic reading/math skills, encourage critical thinking and collaboration with others and empower them with the skills necessary to be successful 21st century learners.
These scholars amaze me each day when they are focused on what they are learning, when they are engaged in the lessons, and when they are excited about what they will learn about next.
My Project
Learning science has traditionally been branded as the "hard" subject in school. Many believe it is because of the difficult vocabulary or the lack of understanding of scientific concepts. It is my goal in this project to incorporate STEM concepts while also combining aspects that they love and enjoy: Art and Technology. Through this STEM Inspired Project Based Learning approach, students will aquire a deeper understanding of the science, math, and engineering concepts while utilizing art and technology in a fun and exciting way.
In this project, my students will be working in a small group to create a Ecosystem Movie using Stop Motion Cameras.
Small groups will select an ecosystem and work together on researching the different living and non-living elements within this ecosystem. The focus will be to follow the path of energy from the sun through the food web in the chosen ecosystem.
Once students have completed the outline (storyboard) for their movie, they will then work on creating the elements of the ecosystem using only natural elements and clay (no store bought animals etc). When creating the living things in the environment, students will be required to be mindful of creating the living/non living elements to scale (mathematics/engineering). To assist with their understanding, I will teach a mini lesson with examples for understanding scale ratio - while tying it in to recent math lessons about powers of 10 and place value. Once the set is created with the background and the storyboard finalized, students will begin creating their stop motion movies with the StopMotion kits. When their movies are completed, we will share the movies with the class and share it with the school on the daily broadcast channel.
