Economics Auction, Budget so You can Buy What You Want

Help me give my students auction items such as: rubik's cubes, stuffed animals, and yo-yos they want to buy with their eco bucks to help learn the life skill of budgeting.

My Students

We are a title one school in Arizona. Seventy-four percent of our students receive free and reduced lunch.

My students are gifted, so they are quick to learn high level math and read at college levels, however economic life skills are foreign to them.

They have interesting quirks that make them so unique that I am just happy to be with my students. They are eager to learn core classwork but need to learn economic skills just like every other middle schooler. My students teach me something every day and in return I would like to make them successful at whatever they choose to do with their lives.

My Project

I am teaching my students an economics unit that runs the entire year. Each student has a job and gets paid (eco bucks). They have to pay for their chair they sit in and a utility bill each month. With their left over money I hold an auction with items students want. What they are asking for, big money items, are stuffed animals, rubiks cubes, yoyo's, thinking putty and key chains. The less expensive items I have been picking up, but the larger amount items are catching up with me.

As in real life, saving up for items you want helps you to learn to budget.

If I get the larger items the students will learn to save their eco bucks to purchase them. Budgeting and saving money are life skills I am trying to teach the students and my auctions are helping to teach this.
