Economic Choices Made in the USA

My students need a class copy of an economics themed picture book, a variety of economics based board games, and a world map for our classroom.

My Students

"Made in the USA", four powerful words that could change the economic condition of our nation! My 4th graders are curious about the impact of these words! Help me capitalize on a very teachable moment to open their minds to the world of economics,

My classroom family of 28 fourth graders is a symphony of creativity, curiosity, intelligence, and character bound together in friendship and community.

This is our second year together. I moved from third to fourth grade with these students this year and the experience has been amazing! Through meaningful and relevant common core standard based integrated units of study, my children and I explore a world of ideas and possibilities!

My Project

After a recent discussion of global current events, my students became very curious about the number of products that are being produced in China. They are concerned that most of the items we wear and use everyday are not things that are made here in our own United States of America. One of the children even suggested that for the holidays, many of them are probably wishing for things that are made in other countries. As we debated and discussed that idea, it became very clear that the students lack an understanding of why the decisions we make about what we purchase have a huge economic impact in the life of our nation, state and communities. To further explore these ideas, I am asking for a variety of economic based board games, literature to engage students in the ideas and processes that drive the economy in our nation and world. I am also asking for a large world map so that the children can connect and track products that are produced at home and abroad.

By helping us bring this fun Economics unit to life, my students will be learning important life-long economic lessons that will help them understand how we are all connected on planet Earth, and what their role is in making good economic choices for their future and the future of the United States of America.
