Ecology Owl Pellet Experiment

My students need large owl pellets to help them understand how consumers in the food chain can only digest a small portion of their prey.

My Students

My students need as much hands on experience in science as I can possibly provide. They are not the type of students who can simply absorb notes. They need to be able to feel and manipulate pieces of science in order to form an authentic understanding of the subject.

My students are 9th graders in Philadelphia who were unlucky enough to go without a steady teacher until I accepted the position in January.

They are hard working students and are hungry for knowledge. They crave the ability to be hands on in our brand new laboratory making discoveries.

My Project

By providing my students with these owl pellets you will be enabling them see the results of energy transfer through a food web first hand. The students will work to dissect the owl pellets in order to determine what their animal had eaten. From their they will determine what tropic level the owl as well as the remnants of its prey belong. They will then make inferences about what they prey may have eaten before being devoured by the owl, and why animals could possibly prey on the owl itself.

When it comes to scientific learning any time you can put a physical prop or example in front of the students you can create a bigger impact on their learning.

This project donation will help to improve my classroom by providing students a chance to experiment in a real laboratory setting where they will learn a multitude of techniques and procedures that they carry with them through the rest of their schooling.
