Be the part of the Whole World. Learn the value of nature. Make choices that would not harm the environment. Learn English in the context of environmental issues. These are the goals I have set for my ESOL students as we are getting ready to launch the unit on protecting the earth.
The students in my ESOL class come from a variety of cultural backgrounds and speak different languages at home.
I am always looking for ways to motivate them to learn English language in context. I do it by enriching the units we are discussing with exciting reading materials, video clips, and crafts. I am also trying to find supplementary materials that would address the diversity of cultures and give the opportunity to share the experience from the home country.
My second and third grade ESOL students are very eager to learn new things and love to draw, read about animals from different habitats, and watch clips about ecosystems that I downloaded from Discovery Education. I know they will be thrilled to learn about the environment and ways to protect it.
My Project
I am planning to launch the unit on animals, the ways they protect themselves from predators, and dangers the animals face from human activities. I would like to read the book "The Great Kapok Tree" by Lynne Cherry that would take my students on an adventure in the Amazon rainforest. The main character in the story is a man who is ordered to cut down the kapok tree but hesitates and discovers that this tree is a unique place that shelters many species of animals. The students will have a chance to see the animals that live in the rainforest and discuss the importance of keeping their natural habitat.
After reading this book we will discuss how different cultures treat nature and describe its value in stories. The book "Barefoot Book of Earth Tales" will allow the students to read seven tales from around the world that offer ways to nurture the environment.
The culminating point of our unit would be responding to the book Whole World by Christopher Corr with a song and activity book!
My students will benefit from participating in the environmental activities because it will make them aware of the value of choices that they make.
I will try to develop appreciation for nature and all the living things that make their home in different ecosystems.
Finally, I believe my students will be more engaged and be able to discuss the issues raised in the new family movie "Furry Vengeance". The books we will read and the activities we do will prepare students for thoughtful watching.
