My students live in East Palo Alto, Redwood City, San Mateo, San Carlos, and Belmont. They come from various socioeconomic backgrounds.
My students are taking on the challenge of learning a completely different language, Chinese, in an area where Spanish is the dominating world language.
My students come in every day with high energy and are eager to learn. They often comment that this is the class they look forward to every day because it is fun and full of laughter. It is very important for my students to have fun while learning such a different and challenging language.
Creative and fun activities are an integral part of our lessons to provide students the opportunity to shine through their creative works! We utilize many tools, such as flashcards, whiteboards, whiteboard markers and erasers, poster papers, scratch papers for learning activities, as well as color markers, crayons, glue sticks, scissors, and other materials for creative activities.
My Project
Teaching Chinese painting and calligraphy is a great way to integrate art, language, and culture. These reusable water-based cloths have significant advantages: saving ink, paper, and precious time.
I want to set up a few stations to differentiate instructions based on students' prior experience and knowledge.
For beginner students, I'd like them to experience using the brush pen on the water-drawing pads. Next, they can move up to tracing the characters and brush strokes. Students with some art or calligraphy experience can practice writing on the reusable paper. Advanced students can use the no-grid cloths to practice writing or painting independently.
