Ages 3-5 year old students with disabilities who are eager to learn. They love books and enjoy listening to stories read by the teacher, listening to books on tape, and watching books come to life on the computer screen. Quote: "Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see."
Although the students come from a low socioeconomic neighborhood where many do not have hot water, clean clothes, nor a bed to sleep in, the circumstances do not dictate who they are.
I believe in empowering students so that they will reach their full potential. Despite their limited cognitive levels of functioning, they are still able to learn. I have a group of children who put forth 100% effort at all times. Their passion to learn gives me the motivation to come to work with a smile on my face each day.
My Project
The requested materials will provide the students with a sensory area where they can sit back, relax, and enjoy reading their favorite book, listen to a book on tape or computer, or enjoy the teacher's daily oral read aloud. The students will begin to learn self-monitoring techniques and time limits with the individual timers.
This project will afford students who don't have access to the simple pleasures in life.
More often than not, we take for granted the fact that as adults, we still love to curl up with a good book or watch a movie, sitting in the corner in the rocking chair or on our favorite spot of the comfy chair or couch. Let's provide these children with an opportunity to experience what it is to have a soothing, relaxing place for story time, and bring back the enjoyment of reading.
