Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are preschoolers with a variety of disabilities from Autism to Downs' Syndrome to Peter's Anomaly. My district is >70% low income and minority. Many of my students are struggling with the new normal we are experiencing.

My goal is to provide materials so that students can equally engage in fun speech activities at home.

I've had multiple students cry during sessions because they didn't have the same toys as their peers. By doing these things, I hope to help build expressive language, receptive language, and even social language at home.

My Project

The bulk of my caseload this year is at the classroom focused on socioemotional regulation and language. In person, we focus on dramatic play activities where we can engage in turn taking and sharing with our peers.

With this project, I hope to send home a play kit so my students can all have a chance to work on academic, fine motor and speech goals at home.

This kit is great for fine motor skills (e.g. cutting, bilateral coordination), academics (e.g. learning new vocabulary) and speech skills (e.g. working on specific sounds, such a C-ut).

Socializing has been very difficult for the children. Many of them remember their peers and are trying to show each other their toys or books, but "show and tell" doesn't have the same socialization piece as group play does. By giving everyone the same play kit, we can work on listening skills (e.g. "Cut the apple in half and give one piece to Jonny"), social language (e.g. "Thanks for the apple, Jane") and work on turn-taking and sharing in the most creative way we can during this difficult time.
