My students need a variety of healthy snacks to choose from as rewards instead of candy. My students also need to have snack options available for times when they are unable to eat breakfast.

Despite differences in background, education, or economic status, all parents want the same thing for their children. Parents want their children to have a limitless future filled with choices. However, some parents are better resourced than others to assist their children in achieving those goals. This includes teaching children what food is good for them and having access to better choices.
While on duty in the cafeteria in the morning, I can expect to see at least one child eating a bag of flaming hot chips or popping a piece of candy into their mouths, all before 8 am!
If our goal, as our superintendent states, is to help students have choice filled lives, this includes helping students to make healthier choices. Instead of filling up on the empty calories provided by a bag of chips or a candy bar, students need to realize that a bag of veggie chips can be just as satisfying. For many of the students in my school, the first step in making good choices is to have options from which to choose.
To have a choice filled life, one must have choices. As it stands, there are a number of businesses selling snacks and other food items in the area surrounding our school. However, these businesses are not in the habit of selling high-quality and healthy foods. As a matter of fact, the restaurants serve burgers and dries, while the stores offer pre-packaged, microwaveable items. There may be some items that have a healthy-aura to their names, but they are still priced more than a snack bag of chips or a candy bar. To put it bluntly, my students and their families are constantly choosing between the lesser of two evils. However, it is not just the students who are making poor snacking choices. Many of the staff members succumb to the temptation of a quick fix! This project may not change the world in one day, but it is aimed to put a dent in the universe.
Instead of a reward of candy or chips, students and staff can satisfy a craving with better options.
By expanding their options, I can hopefully help students and staff to enjoy healthier options so much more that they actively seek those choices. Although this may mean traveling further to find better options, it could also lead to advocacy. Companies and services come to areas where there is a demand, and perhaps we can create the demand that leads to greater options. The short-term goal of this project is much more immediate. Students will be able to eat snacks that are better for them, while learning to make better choices.
