Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I teach a wonderful group of 20 students who are eager to learn! Most come to school without the resources that are needed to succeed; as a result, I spend a lot of my own money on the basic supplies that we use day to day.

My classroom is comprised of students who are bright and curious.

A few are able to complete grade level tasks without assistance, but most are working below grade level in all academic areas. Some are challenged with multiple academic challenges that make learning basic skills difficult; others do not have the support at home to assist in practicing the skills that they are learning at school. All of my students love hands-on activities and exciting, colorful books so I try to incorporate those things into every lesson.

I have been teaching for over 20 years, and I can honestly say that my current class is one of the sweetest I have ever had. They are deserving of so much more than they have, I simply do what I can to keep them excited about learning. I want to continue to feed their hunger for education and, of course, for reading!

My Project

In the elementary grades, students who are not practicing the skills they learn in school at home suffer setbacks. Whenever there is a break, students who are not working at home on a daily basis return to school having forgotten valuable information. This means that I have to spend time reviewing material that has already been taught. It can be a very frustrating cycle that keeps children like my students from ever truly "catching up" to their peers in schools where families can afford to do the things that make students want to do school work at home.

Easy Peasy Pockets are all about getting my students excited about learning at home!

These Pockets include resource books that cover our Language Arts, Science, and Mathematics standards. I've chosen brightly colored, reusable, functional, and sturdy Pockets that each students will be able to individualize. Also included in my project is a station that will be stocked with the add-ons that the school provides - pencils, erasers, etc. - so that each student can take what they need to complete their learning at home. With these Pockets my students will have all that they need to practice the skills that we are learning at school at no cost to their families.

My students love having bright and shiny new materials, and when they are able to take personal ownership of those materials they are much more likely to work at home, even when there is no one to encourage them to do so. Easy Peasy Pockets, coupled with my incentives for students to keep up the learning at home, will ensure that they do something every day of every break to keep up the skills that have been taught in school.
