Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In AP Biology and AP Environmental Science we do a lot of labs and activities that require gathering data; things like pH, temperature, salinity, turbidity, conductivity, gas concentrations... the list goes on and on. We have enough Vernier sensors to conduct our labs, but those sensors need to be connected to old Windows PC using older software. These PCs are slow and cannot be upgraded.

The goal of this project is to make the gathering of data, the interpretation of the data and the presentation of the data quick, easy, fast and versatile.

We can connect our Vernier sensors to Vernier Labquest interfaces and perform our labs without having to deal with older PCs that take a long time to boot up, cannot be upgraded, have a tendency to freeze or begin updating/restarting in the middle of a lab. It is very frustrating for students to have to deal with these inconveniences. Also, Labquest interfaces would allow the AP Environmental Science studies to go out into the field (for example, a local stream) and carry out measurements in the field itself.

My students are all enrolled in STEM courses, so they are mostly tuned in to the idea of scientific inquiry and investigation. They get very excited when they come up with a hypothesis and a prediction, set up the lab, get the sensors running, and watch as the results begin to stream on the screen. There's real joy when the results match their predictions.
