My Project
I have been a middle school health teacher for 19 years. My previous school district was able to offer me a budget that I used to fund a "Hygiene Bin" for my students. I am now teaching in a lower-income city school district and I no longer have the department budget I used to, in order to fund this valuable access to personal hygiene products in my classroom. As part of my health education curriculum, I teach lessons on basic hygiene. However, due to their own family's financial hardships, students do not always have access to the hygiene products they need, when they need them. Sometimes, it could be that they just simply forgot to put their deodorant on that morning and have a sports practice after school they're worried about being smelly for. Anyone who's been around a middle school student knows hygiene is important to everyone around them. Other teachers in the building appreciate having these items being available in my classroom, as a place they can send a student who may be in need of access to these products too. It takes a village in a school community. The educational benefits of students who are able to have the most basic of hygiene needs met during their school day, improves their overall success. When you feel good about yourself, you do your best. This essential project impacts students socially, emotionally, and academically. It helps them thrive in the school community.
