Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I'm a fifth grade teacher by day and a candidate for a master's degree in Literacy at Teachers College by night. My two lives overlap since I teach Reading and Writing Workshop to a wonderful, hard-working group of 30 gifted fifth graders in the East Harlem Section of Manhattan who have truly embraced the idea of living like a writer. These students carry their writer's notebook with them and write down their noticings, wonderings, and also the happenings of their day-to-day lives. In just four months, my students have flourished as writers, publishing their work three times in school. Over two-thirds of my students are presently engaged in an independent writing project, which they do after school or work on while they eat their lunch. As you can see, THESE ARE HIGHLY MOTIVATED STUDENTS. My school purchased five-subject, spiral notebooks for all the students. However, the covers of these notebooks are flimsy and fall off easily. Additionally, my kids go through the notebooks quickly... one ever two to three months. They're writing a lot therefore need a proper writer's notebook in order to truly live like a writer. I need your assistance in order to obtain TWO writer's notebooks for each child so that they will have ample pages to write on, that won't come apart, for the duration of the school year.
