This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students live in one of the poorest communities in Brooklyn. Some live in shelters and travel a great deal to arrive at school. Most are from single family homes and the majority of them live in the housing projects close by. They are wonderful creative, talented and artistic children. They are always eager to be at school with their friends and teachers. Our school is predominantly African American with a small percentage of Hispanic children. Around 97% of them eat the free lunch at our school.
My students have a great passion for the arts and love creating and exploring with new materials.
They have great passion and create some of the most amazing pieces of art work. Art has a way of helping them to express their individual self.
My students are polite and kind hearted. They are very supportive of their peers as well as school staff. Any teacher would be very proud to call them her students.
My Project
My artistic students love to do art. They like to get their hands messy. They love sitting on the floor to create art on long strips of paper while chatting with their friends. They enjoy standing to paint, as this is a comfortable position for my young artists. They wave their brushes about dipping and splashing as they create masterpieces. In most cases, my students enjoy doing a second and third piece of art when painting.
Painting brings my students a sense of calm and peace.
The room becomes silent when they begin to paint and they are lost in an excited fashion in a world of wonder. My students have never had easels to work from. I would like them to see how it feels to paint in an upright position. They have always sat down to paint, in the very position that they write in. I believe that they will be even more creative with wonderful easels to work from.
