This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach fourth grade in the South Bronx section of New York City. Our school is considered a low-performing school. The majority of our students are performing below state standards. We are currently at risk of being a school under state review. One hundred percent of our students receive free lunch. Classrooms are overcrowded.
Our school received a grant from America's Choice. America's Choice mandates that teachers refrain from using chalkboards for instruction. We are required to gather in a "Gathering Spot" for every mini-lesson in all subjects. Teachers were given chart tablets, but with nothing to hold them.
Right now I am using a chair as an easel. Students have a hard time reading the charts making my mini-lessons and modeling very difficult. If I had an easel, as every teacher should, students will have a good view of the charts (which I use to model skills and strategies). Students will also engage in shared writing without having to kneel down or hunch over. We experience great discomfort. My students and I would appreciate assistance in obtaining an easel for our classroom. Thank you.
