I teach second grade in a small town in the Florida. My students come from high poverty backgrounds with little to no parent involvement and support. Although they have challenging backgrounds, my students are extremely vibrant and willing to learn.
My second graders are truly little sponges!
Each morning, they enter our classroom ready to learn or do something new and exciting. I teach in a high-poverty community and find that my students often do not receive the attention they need from their parents or guardians. Therefore, my daily goal is to provide students with meaningful, quality interaction and instruction. Because my students are still very young, 7-8 years old, they enjoy a hands-on approach to learning. The proposed classroom easel will allow me to provide students with visual and tactile instruction in reading, math, science and writing.
The proposed teaching easel is designed to encourage student interaction and participation during our daily whole group and small group lessons. This easel would be the centerpiece tool used in our lessons. For reading, I would be able to display "big books" and provide easy visuals for phonics instruction. Students will be able to manipulate numbers and graphs for math, using the magnetic dry-erase board located on the easel. In writing, students will be able to write or illustrate outlines and stories. I chose this dry-erase easel so students can quickly erase and re-write as needed. This easel also has easy access storage for teaching supplies.
This easel would be such an integral teaching tool for our classroom.
Each morning, we begin our day as a "classroom family" with Morning Meeting. The classroom easel would be integrated into Morning Meeting, and would hold our fun "props" for our morning activities. By funding this classroom easel project, you will be assisting me in providing the tools to reach high-poverty learners in the most effective way possible.
