"Look, it is a "green" bag." This is what one of my students proudly told me as she showed me a bag she was using to carry her things. My students are learning to conserve and save as much as they can. They only use "green" water bottles (ones that can be filled and used daily).
These enthusiastic "green" consumers of mine are a public school fifth grade class at a Title One school.
Most of them speak more than one language and the majority are former or current English language learners. The one thing they have in common is their passion about saving the planet and conserving its resources. I have tried to foster this spirit in this class because last year's class taught me to be so passionate about living things. Seeing how easily the idea can spread I want this class to become ambassadors of the "green approach". That is why I am requesting two Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle Activity Kits and an Environmental Library set.
My Project
I feel that the Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle Activity Kits will give the students the hands-on experiences they need to fuel their passion for conservationism and living green. Completing these activities will give them actual experiences to talk about with their family and friends as they encourage others to try the three R approach to life. The environmental library will help them to learn that conservationism and living "green" goes beyond just the three Rs. It is my hope that what they learn from these paperbacks they share with others to encourage them to be better green consumers. An added benefit to these materials is that the Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle Activity Kits build their science and observation skills and the environmental library enhances their literacy skills. Therefore, they are learning at many levels as they practice this green approach.
Anyone who listens to the news today knows the importance of living green and it is essential that we get students started as young as possible in this approach.
The number of people whose lives they can touch and influence is infinite and by funding this proposal you are helping not only this class of students but the people they touch and the Earth itself.
