I want my sixth graders to remember the year they made a mess and and learn something in the process. Each year, I show videos and demonstrate with my 3D model. This year, I want all my students involved exploring the natural phenomena of volcanoes.
Our urban school is unique because of our location.
Parents are eager to send their children to our charter school because of the safe environment and rigorous programming. All of our students are bused from many parts of the city, some travel over a hour to attend. Therefore, students are limited to bringing supplies into school. Some students will be discouraged when there is a creative project that requires art supplies. Parents give the essentials of pencils and notebooks but can not afford the art and crafts.
My Project
Most of my students have never actually seen a volcano, besides the movies. I plan to bring the movie image into the classroom. Students learn by doing. I want them to work in teams to explore, inquire and build. The 30 basic volcano kits that I am requesting will allow each students to make a model in the classroom. This lesson will grab the attention of the entire school. Making models of volcanoes provides students with a means to make the unfamiliar more familiar (and fun!).
As they make their volcanoes, students will hypothesize, test, problem-solve and discover various concepts related to volcanoes.
These kits will make a huge difference to my lesson planning. I want to encourage future scientists.
