The sixth grade students at our charter school are inquisitive and demanding of an education. Their lack of funds does not match their desire for learning. The foundation of our school is the feeling of empowerment. Students and their families feel privileged to attend our charter and therefore come ready to learn. As teachers, it is our responsibility to be prepared to teach. This includes supplies for science. Many of our youth describe that science class is their favorite subject because they are using all of their senses to discover the world around them. They read in the textbook, listen to videos, and want to actually experiment how matter changes. In the urban environment that our students live, they are limited to the outside. It is the activities planned by me that engage them to ask more questions. Science needs to be inquiry based to be effective. I don't want my students to feel obstacles in the classroom that they might feel in their home life.
