My Students
This project is inspired by Beach Buddies-Teach for the Planet. A typical day in my classroom is filled with learning, fitness, and fun. We implement Common Core standards in all curriculum areas. My students are eager to learn more about caring for the environment. Earth Day should be everyday.
My first grade students attend an inner-city school in southern California.
They live in a low socioeconomic community. Gangs, crime, and violence are commonplace. Students receive free breakfast and lunch at school. The majority of them are my last year students from Kindergarten. They are excited to be in first grade and learn new things.
This year I have a pretty good balance of boys and girls. They have unlimited amounts of energy on a daily basis. We enjoy putting that energy to good use in the form of P.E. I think Tennis Tuesday is their favorite activity.
My class largely consists of English Language Learners. This is also true for our school. I would describe our school as a place for educating the whole child. Our main priority is academics of course, but in a fun and engaging way. We set high expectations and strive to meet the needs of all students. My school focuses on the 3r's: relationship, rigor and relevance. We love our students and only want the best for them.
My Project
In the Beach Buddies project by Mrs. Burke the students learned about ocean conservation. My project will also teach students about the dangers of plastic bags in regards to ocean life. We don't live on the island of Oahu, but I can show the students videos/documentaries of how plastic bags are polluting the ocean. Just like the original project, my students will create a slogan and decorate canvas bags to be used every time they go shopping.
I am inspired by the Beach Buddies project to have my students clean our environment. We will use the gloves to pick up trash and classify it. I am requesting tubs, vegetable oil (I will add food coloring) and oil absorbing pads so that we can create a mock oil spill cleanup too. We will also be using a GoPro camera to document the experience and produce awareness videos.
Teaching students the importance of caring for their environment is very important. If they take the lessons to heart, they maybe inspired to consider a future in science.
Donations to this project will improve my students' connection to the planet.
They will realize that even the smallest actions can have a large impact (positive or negative) on our earth. Simple things such as turning off lights when leaving a room, reusable bags and bottles, as well as conserving water when washing your hands and brushing your teeth can help the planet. I hope that they will learn to respect the environment and all living things and continue these practices into adulthood.
