Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are in sixth, seventh, and eight grade. All of my students have special needs and are in the lowest 25% of their grade level. Their various disabilities range from Learning Disability in Reading and math coupled with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), to Intellectually Disabled, to Autism Spectrum Disorder. More than three‑quarters of students are from low‑income households. Regardless of their hardships, they all show a desire to learn and aspire to be successful. As their teacher, I provide them with specialized instruction in mathematics language arts, reading, writing, U.S History, and essential social skills that are critical for long-term success.
My students need Virtual Reality Headsets and refurbished cell phones for an Earth Day tour around the world.
I need to do all I can during school hours to engage, motivate, and inspire my students to learn, so they can become well-developed, independent, and productive young men and women. Please help me provide my students with a fun an engaging way to appreciate the world without leaving the classroom.
My Project
For students with various learning disabilities, preferable learning styles and modalities, showing works better than telling. Students learn better, and retain information longer when they are taught through tasks that are based on visuals such as tutorials, apps, and videos. For students with disabilities, Virtual Reality gives the opportunity to travel outside of the classroom to places that they would not normally experience first hand.
Taking a Virtual Reality filed trip on Earth Day, will connect Special Needs Students to nature and environment in a fun, safe, and free of limitations.
My goal is to take my students around the world and experience nature in a whole new way. With the aid of the virtual reality viewers and smartphones, students will have options of devices based on level of comfort and knowledge, have control over the amount of stimuli they are presented with, be able to modify their experience to meet their own auditory and visual cues, and have a valuable opportunity to experience the environment and never leave the classroom. Students will virtually explore a forest via the UPM Forest Life, and create digital presentation of their experiences. The digital cameras will make learning more interesting for students by taking pictures of completed projects, activities, that will be shown during parent conferences and open houses. This project will not be short lived. These resources will enhance our learning about environmental issues, geography, and will evolve into on-going interactive lessons. Students will experience nature and environment using programs and apps such as the NY Times virtual reality, Google Expeditions, and PBS Nature, while integrating technology into our daily classroom routine. This is part 2 of my Earth Day project. In part 1, I am requesting various whiteboards and technology that will assist us with going paperless for a month.
