My Students
Most of my 9th grade students are struggling, trying to stay motivated in school. I teach Earth and Space Science and many of the concepts are on a large scale from the formation of the universe to global natural resources. This makes it difficult to personally relate to these concepts. It is also hard to do engaging hands-on activities. I have many students with special educational challenges and ESL students in my 6 classes. A great percentage of my students have not traveled very far from their hometown. When I try to bring up examples of Earth’s geologic features in the U.S. most students have no idea what I am talking about.
To combat these problems I want to use games to enhance my Earth and Space Science instruction.
Effective games link content with low-stakes competition and can provide a more collaborative, engaging classroom experience—especially for students who may struggle to focus or find their niche in learning. During the pandemic, games can provide an important outlet that keeps kids connected and motivated. According to research, using games in teaching can help increase student participation, foster social and emotional learning, and motivate students to take risks.
My Project
I want to use these three board games to help students to understand, in a fun, hands-on activity some of the more difficult Earth and Space Science concepts that they struggle with. If students are engaged and enjoying the activity, they are more likely to learn.
