My Students
I have been teaching kindergarten for 27 years in a great school, which is located in a low income community. Despite the often sad circumstances some of my students face, they are beating the odds every day. My students are bright, friendly, and extremely eager to learn new things. They love to explore and learn through play and hands-on experiences, which is the way it should be for a group of 5 and 6-year-olds.
With the current trend being all about test scores and less about letting kids be kids, I feel it is my duty to make learning as meaningful and engaging as I can for my students, while also making it fun!
My Project
We are in the middle of the first year of our amazing new play-based curriculum. One of our favorite literacy centers is focused on active listening. Small groups of students take turns listening to a story read to them on CD while looking at the book with a partner. They are given a specific comprehension strategy to keep in mind while they are listening, such as visualization, inferences, making connections, predictions, character empathy, story comparison and story grammar.
With that being said, it would be wonderful to have some engaging, new book and CD sets, as well as some new headphones for our listening center.
My students are now making due with some headphones that I have had for many years that do not always work properly. It makes me sad to hear them say they can only hear the story in one ear. I would love for my students to be able to hear the story loud and clear, in both ears, and to have a larger selection of stories for them to listen to.
